HikeCast support

Hiking weather for US mountains, scored for the trailhead, treeline and summit.

Email support@alexandersousa.work with the mountain, the day and what you saw. Settings shows the app's version and build at the bottom; please include them.

Safety first

HikeCast is a planning guide, not a guarantee. Mountain weather changes fast and can differ from any forecast. Check the official National Weather Service forecast, current alerts and the local rangers before an exposed route, and turn around when conditions are worse than expected.

Common questions

How is the score worked out?
Each day gets a score from 0 to 100 at the summit, from rain and snow, wind, wind chill and heat, cloud and visibility, thunderstorm risk and daylight. A National Weather Service warning, or summit wind of 40 mph or gusts of 60 mph, caps the day at Poor. Settings explains each part.

Where does the weather come from?
Forecasts and air quality come from Open-Meteo, which combines the main national weather models. Official alerts come from the National Weather Service. On peaks that stand well above their surroundings, summit wind leans on the free air at summit height, because exposed summits are much windier than the valleys around them.

Why does my mountain show a different height than I expected?
The built-in peak list comes from the US Geological Survey's names database through GeoNames, with summits checked against USGS elevation data and published survey heights. If a peak looks wrong, email the name, state and the height you expected.

A mountain is missing from search.
About 10,000 US peaks are built in. Others are found by place search when you are online. You can also type coordinates, such as 44.2705, -71.3035.

Peaks near me doesn't work.
It needs location permission while using the app. Turn it on in the iPhone's Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then HikeCast.

Does it work without signal?
The last forecast for each mountain stays on your iPhone, and the screen says how old it is. New forecasts need a connection.

Which countries does it cover?
The built-in peaks and the official alerts are for the United States. Forecasts work anywhere, without alerts.
